Initially, my intention for this café project was to check out local Saint Paul coffee shops and capture the unique feel of each in just a few photos. What it morphed into, though, was a study of people. I have always considered myself an introvert, but because of, and through photography, I have challenged myself to be more outgoing.
I filled a treasure chest full of perspectives and insight while sharing a cup of coffee with these lovely individuals, and my project became less about the aesthetic of an establishment and more about sharing the beautiful struggles and joys of life with these humans. It did not end up as I expected, but I love where it took me. This is a work in progress as I make my way through a list of local cafés and people to join me in them.
I was honored to have this series featured in Racket Magazine’s “Portraits In a Café: Slice‑of‑Life Scenes From 21 St. Paul Coffee Shops”—a lovely affirmation that there’s something deeply meaningful in simply sitting down with someone and listening.
This series is dedicated to my dear grandmother Jackie and all those who loved her. That woman drank more coffee than water. 💜
